Louisiana SNAP Income Limits 2026: Eligibility and How to Apply

Louisiana SNAP income limits for 2026 by household size, net income thresholds, deductions, and step-by-step application guide via LA CAFE portal.

Louisiana SNAP benefits help low-income households pay for groceries each month. For fiscal year 2026 (October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026), a single person can earn up to $1,632 per month in gross income and still qualify. A family of four can earn up to $3,380 per month. These numbers come from the federal poverty guidelines and apply to standard households. Read on for the full income table, net income limits, deductions, and a step-by-step guide to applying through the Louisiana CAFE portal.

Louisiana SNAP Gross Income Limits 2026

Most households must pass a gross income test before anything else. Gross income is your total household income before any deductions. The limit is 130% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL).

Household SizeGross Monthly Income LimitGross Annual Income Limit
1$1,632$19,584
2$2,215$26,580
3$2,798$33,576

5$3,963$47,556

7$5,129$61,548
8$5,712$68,544

These limits are set by the USDA Food and Nutrition Service and apply across Louisiana. The Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) uses these same figures when reviewing applications.

Louisiana SNAP Net Income Limits 2026

After passing the gross income test, most households must also pass a net income test. Net income is what remains after applying allowable deductions. The net income limit is 100% of the Federal Poverty Level.

Household SizeNet Monthly Income LimitNet Annual Income Limit
1$1,255$15,060
2$1,704$20,448
3$2,152$25,824
4$2,600$31,200
5$3,049$36,588
6$3,497$41,964
7$3,946$47,352
8$4,394$52,728
Each additional person+$449+$5,388

Households that include a member aged 60 or older, or a member receiving disability benefits, are exempt from the gross income test. They only need to meet the net income limit.

Louisiana SNAP Deductions That Lower Your Countable Income

Louisiana SNAP uses several deductions to calculate net income. These deductions can make a big difference in whether you qualify and how much you receive.

Standard deduction: $204 per month for households of 1 to 3 people. This increases slightly for larger households.

Earned income deduction: 20% of earned income is excluded. If you work, only 80% of your wages count toward net income.

Dependent care deduction: Costs you pay for childcare or other dependent care while you work or attend training.

Medical expense deduction: Elderly or disabled household members can deduct out-of-pocket medical costs above $35 per month.

Excess shelter deduction: Housing costs (rent, mortgage, utilities) that exceed 50% of your net income after other deductions. The shelter deduction is capped at $712 per month, unless your household includes an elderly or disabled member (no cap applies in that case).

Homeless shelter deduction: $190.30 per month for households without a fixed address.

Maximum SNAP Benefit Amounts 2026

The maximum monthly benefit you can receive depends on household size. You receive the maximum only if your net income is $0. Most households receive less.

Household SizeMaximum Monthly Benefit
1$292
2$536
3$768
4$975
5$1,158
6$1,390
7$1,536
8$1,756

Your actual benefit is calculated as 30% of your net monthly income subtracted from the maximum allotment for your household size.

Louisiana SNAP Broad-Based Categorical Eligibility

Louisiana participates in Broad-Based Categorical Eligibility (BBCE). Under BBCE, households that receive a non-cash TANF-funded benefit may qualify for SNAP with a higher income limit, up to 200% of the Federal Poverty Level. This also eliminates the standard asset test for most households.

BBCE income limits at 200% FPL:

Household SizeBBCE Gross Monthly Income Limit
1$2,510
2$3,406
3$4,302
4$5,198
5$6,094
6$6,990
7$7,886
8$8,782

Under BBCE, Louisiana has no asset limit for most households. The $3,000 asset limit (or $4,500 for households with an elderly or disabled member) only applies in limited circumstances.

Louisiana SNAP 2026 Rule Changes

Louisiana implemented a significant policy change on February 18, 2026. Under a two-year pilot approved by the USDA in August 2025, SNAP benefits in Louisiana can no longer be used to purchase:

  • Soft drinks and carbonated beverages sweetened with high fructose corn syrup or artificial sweeteners
  • Energy drinks containing added stimulants like caffeine, guarana, or taurine
  • Candy, including gum and mints (defined as preparations of sugar or sweeteners in bar, drop, or piece form)

This restriction affects approximately 750,000 Louisiana SNAP recipients. Exceptions include beverages made with cane sugar, protein bars, granola bars, and baking ingredients like chocolate chips.

Who Qualifies for Louisiana SNAP in 2026

To be eligible, you must meet all of the following:

Residency: You must live in Louisiana.

Citizenship or immigration status: You must be a U.S. citizen or a qualified non-citizen. Qualified non-citizens include lawful permanent residents, refugees, asylees, and certain other immigration categories. Contact DCFS at 1-888-524-3578 for questions about specific immigration statuses.

Social Security Numbers: All household members applying for benefits must provide a Social Security Number or proof of application for one.

Income: Your household income must fall within the gross and net income limits listed above, or within BBCE limits.

Work requirements: Able-bodied adults without dependents (ABAWDs) aged 18 to 54 must work, participate in job training, or volunteer at least 80 hours per month. You are exempt from this requirement if you have children in the household, are 55 or older, have a documented disability, already work 30 or more hours per week, or attend school at least half time.

Drug felony history: Louisiana does not disqualify applicants based on past drug felony convictions.

Homeless applicants: People without a permanent address can still apply and receive benefits.

How to Apply for Louisiana SNAP in 2026

Louisiana processes SNAP applications through the CAFE (Customer Access to Federal and State Earned Benefits) system, administered by DCFS. You have four ways to apply.

Step 1: Gather Your Documents

Before applying, collect:

  • Proof of identity (driver's license, state ID, or passport)
  • Social Security Numbers for all household members applying
  • Proof of Louisiana residency (utility bill, lease agreement, or similar document)
  • Proof of income for all household members (recent pay stubs, employer letter, or benefit award letters)
  • Proof of housing costs (rent receipt, mortgage statement, or utility bills)
  • Proof of any childcare, medical, or dependent care expenses you want to deduct

Step 2: Choose Your Application Method

Option A: Apply online through LA CAFE

Visit cafe-cp.dcfs.la.gov to create an account. Navigate to "My Applications" and complete the electronic application. You can also upload documents directly through the portal and track your application status online.

Option B: Apply by phone

Call the DCFS SNAP hotline at 1-888-524-3578. Representatives are available to walk you through the application.

Option C: Apply in person

Visit your local DCFS Economic Stability office. Bring all documents listed in Step 1. Staff can assist you in completing the application in person or online at an office terminal.

Option D: Apply by mail or fax

Download a paper application from the DCFS website and mail or fax it to your local office.

Step 3: Complete Your Interview

After submitting your application, a DCFS caseworker may contact you to schedule a phone interview. The interview covers your household composition, income sources, and any deductions you are claiming. Most interviews are conducted by phone, though in-person interviews are available.

Step 4: Receive Your Eligibility Decision

DCFS has 30 days from the date of application to make an eligibility determination. You will receive written notification of the decision by mail. If approved, your benefits are backdated to your application date, so you do not lose benefits while waiting for the decision.

Expedited SNAP: If your household has very little income and resources, you may qualify for expedited processing, with benefits available within 7 days. You generally qualify for expedited processing if your monthly gross income is below $150 and your resources are below $100, or if your combined monthly income and resources are less than your rent and utility costs.

Step 5: Receive Your Louisiana Purchase Card

If approved, you will receive a Louisiana Purchase Card (EBT card) in the mail. Benefits are loaded to the card on a monthly schedule based on your case number. You can use the card at any SNAP-authorized retailer in Louisiana or any other state. Remember that as of February 18, 2026, you cannot use your card for soft drinks, energy drinks, or candy.

Renewing Louisiana SNAP Benefits

SNAP benefits are not permanent. Most households must renew their benefits every 12 months. You will receive a renewal notice by mail before your current certification period ends. You can complete the renewal online through the LA CAFE portal, by phone, or in person.

If you miss your renewal deadline, your benefits will stop. You can reapply, but a new application starts the 30-day processing clock over again.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Louisiana SNAP income limits for 2026?

A single-person household can have gross monthly income up to $1,632 (130% FPL) and net monthly income up to $1,255 (100% FPL). For a family of four, the gross monthly limit is $3,380 and the net monthly limit is $2,600. These limits apply from October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026.

Does Louisiana have an asset limit for SNAP?

Most Louisiana households face no asset limit due to Broad-Based Categorical Eligibility. A $3,000 asset limit (or $4,500 for households with an elderly or disabled member) applies only in limited cases where a household does not receive a TANF-funded benefit and earns above the standard 130% FPL gross income limit.

Can seniors and disabled people have higher income for SNAP in Louisiana?

Yes. Households with a member aged 60 or older, or a member who receives disability benefits (SSI, SSDI, or similar), are exempt from the gross income test. They only need to meet the net income limit at 100% FPL. They also have no shelter deduction cap, which can further reduce their net income calculation.

How long does it take to get approved for SNAP in Louisiana?

Standard processing takes up to 30 days from the date of application. If your household qualifies for expedited SNAP (very low income and resources), benefits can be available within 7 days. If approved, benefits are backdated to your application date.

Can you apply for Louisiana SNAP online?

Yes. You can apply online through the LA CAFE Customer Portal at cafe-cp.dcfs.la.gov. You can create an account, submit your application, upload documents, and track your application status through the same portal.

What counts as income for Louisiana SNAP?

All earned and unearned income counts, including wages, self-employment income, Social Security benefits, pension payments, child support, unemployment insurance, and rental income. Some income is excluded, including the 20% earned income deduction, educational grants and loans used for tuition, and certain payments to volunteers.

Can I use SNAP for soda and candy in Louisiana in 2026?

No. As of February 18, 2026, Louisiana SNAP recipients cannot use benefits to purchase soft drinks, energy drinks, or candy. This restriction runs through January 12, 2028 as a federally approved pilot program. Cane sugar sodas, protein bars, and baking ingredients like chocolate chips are still eligible.

What is the maximum SNAP benefit for a family of four in Louisiana?

The maximum monthly SNAP benefit for a household of four is $975 in 2026. You receive this amount only if your net income is $0. Most households receive a partial benefit calculated by subtracting 30% of their net monthly income from the maximum allotment.
