SSDI Payment Date by Birth Date 2026: SSA Schedule

Find your 2026 SSDI payment date by birth date. Full SSA schedule with exact dates for all 12 months, holiday adjustments, and exceptions explained.

Your SSDI payment date in 2026 depends on your birthday. The Social Security Administration (SSA) divides recipients into three groups based on the day of the month they were born, then assigns each group a specific Wednesday each month. If you started receiving benefits after May 1997, this birth-date-based schedule applies to you. If you started before May 1997, you receive payments on the 3rd of each month instead.

This guide covers the full 2026 payment schedule with exact dates for every month, holiday adjustment rules, and what to do if your payment is late.

How the SSA Assigns Payment Dates

The SSA uses your date of birth, not your birth year, to determine which Wednesday you get paid. Here is how the three groups break down:

Birth Date (Day of Month)Payment Day
1st through 10thSecond Wednesday of the month
11th through 20thThird Wednesday of the month
21st through 31stFourth Wednesday of the month

For example, if you were born on March 7, you fall in the 1st-10th group and receive payment on the second Wednesday of each month. If you were born on November 25, you are in the 21st-31st group and receive payment on the fourth Wednesday.

November 2026 Holiday Adjustment

Veterans Day falls on Wednesday, November 11, which is a federal holiday. Recipients born on the 1st through 10th who would normally receive payment on November 11 will instead receive payment on Tuesday, November 10. The other two groups are not affected in November.

Who Receives Payment on the 3rd of Each Month

Two categories of SSDI recipients receive payments on the 3rd of each month instead of following the Wednesday schedule:

  1. Recipients who began receiving benefits before May 1997. The SSA grandfathered these beneficiaries into the original fixed-date system.
  2. Recipients who receive both SSDI and SSI. If you get Supplemental Security Income in addition to SSDI, your SSDI payment arrives on the 3rd of the month and your SSI payment arrives on the 1st.

When the 3rd falls on a weekend or holiday, the SSA issues payment on the preceding business day.

2026 SSDI Monthly Payment Amounts

The 2026 SSDI amounts reflect a 2.5% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) applied in January 2026. Some sources cite 2.8% depending on the reference period; SSA confirmed 2.5% for 2026.

Recipient CategoryEstimated 2026 Monthly Benefit
Average SSDI recipientApproximately $1,580 per month
Maximum SSDI benefitUp to $4,018 per month
Disabled worker, averageApproximately $1,580 per month
Disabled worker with spouse and childrenApproximately $2,757 per month

Your actual benefit amount depends on your lifetime earnings record. You can view your exact benefit amount by logging into your my Social Security account at ssa.gov.

What to Do If Your SSDI Payment Is Late

If your payment does not arrive on the scheduled date, follow these steps:

  1. Wait three business days. The SSA recommends waiting three mailing days after your scheduled payment date before taking action. Direct deposit is almost always on time, but paper checks take longer.
  2. Check your bank account. Confirm the deposit is not pending or already posted under a different description.
  3. Log into my Social Security. Visit ssa.gov and sign into your account to verify your payment status and check for any alerts.
  4. Call the SSA. If the payment is more than three business days late, call 1-800-772-1213. TTY users can call 1-800-325-0778. Phone lines are open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Do not request a replacement payment immediately. The SSA requires a waiting period before issuing a replacement to avoid duplicate payments.

How to Set Up Direct Deposit

Direct deposit is the fastest and safest way to receive SSDI payments. The SSA no longer mails paper checks to most new recipients. To set up or update direct deposit:

  • Online: Log into my Social Security at ssa.gov and update your payment information under "My Profile."
  • By phone: Call 1-800-772-1213 and ask a representative to update your banking information.
  • In person: Visit your local Social Security office with a voided check or bank account information.

You will need your bank routing number and account number. Changes typically take one to two payment cycles to take effect, so update your information at least 30 days before you need the change to go through.

How Payment Dates Work for New SSDI Recipients

When you are approved for SSDI, the SSA assigns you to the payment group that matches your birth date. You will always receive payment on the same Wednesday each month going forward unless you also qualify for SSI or you were receiving benefits before May 1997.

New recipients are also entitled to back pay for the period between their established onset date and approval. Back pay is typically issued as a lump sum and deposited separately from your ongoing monthly benefit.

Planning Your Budget Around Payment Dates

Because SSDI payments follow a predictable Wednesday schedule, you can align your monthly bills with your deposit date. Some practical steps:

  • Contact lenders or utility companies to change your due dates so they fall a few days after your payment date.
  • Keep one month of expenses in reserve if possible. This buffer protects you if a holiday adjustment shifts your payment earlier or if there is a rare processing delay.
  • Set up automatic bill pay after your payment posts to avoid late fees.

If you are also receiving SSI, note that SSI payments arrive on the 1st of each month (or the last business day before if the 1st is a weekend or holiday), which may be several weeks before or after your SSDI payment depending on your birth date.

Check Your Full Benefits Eligibility

SSDI is one of many federal programs that may be available to you. If you are receiving SSDI, you may also qualify for Medicare (after a 24-month waiting period), SSI if your income is low enough, SNAP food assistance, and LIHEAP utility assistance. Frequently Asked Questions

What date will my SSDI payment arrive in 2026?

Your payment date depends on the day of the month you were born. If you were born on the 1st through 10th, you are paid on the second Wednesday of each month. Born on the 11th through 20th means you are paid on the third Wednesday. Born on the 21st through 31st means you receive payment on the fourth Wednesday. See the full month-by-month table above for exact 2026 dates.

Why do I receive payment on the 3rd instead of a Wednesday?

You receive payment on the 3rd if you started receiving Social Security benefits before May 1997, or if you receive both SSDI and SSI. The SSA kept earlier recipients on the original fixed-date system when it switched to the Wednesday schedule in 1997.

What happens to my payment if the Wednesday is a federal holiday?

The SSA issues your payment on the business day immediately before the holiday. For example, if your normal payment date is Wednesday, November 11 (Veterans Day), you will receive payment on Tuesday, November 10 instead.

Can I change my SSDI payment date?

No. The SSA assigns payment dates based on your birth date and you cannot request a different date. The only way your payment date would change is if your benefit type changes, for example if you move from SSDI to retirement benefits at full retirement age.

How do I find out my exact SSDI benefit amount?

Log into your my Social Security account at ssa.gov/myaccount. Your benefit letter and payment history are available there. You can also call 1-800-772-1213 to ask a representative.

Does turning 65 change my SSDI payment date?

No. When you reach full retirement age, the SSA automatically converts your SSDI to Social Security retirement benefits, but your payment date does not change. The amount may adjust slightly based on your earnings record.

Will SSDI payment dates change in 2027?

The Wednesday-based birth date system has been in place since 1997 and is not expected to change. The SSA publishes a new payment calendar each year. You can check ssa.gov/pubs/calendar.htm for the official updated schedule.

What if I receive SSDI and Medicare? Does that affect my payment date?

No. Medicare enrollment does not affect your SSDI payment date. These are separate programs administered differently. Your Medicare premium may be deducted directly from your SSDI payment, but the date of deposit remains tied to your birth date group.
