SSI Monthly Payment Date Schedule 2026: SSA Calendar

Full SSI payment date schedule for every month of 2026, including holiday and weekend adjustments, payment amounts, and what to do if your check is late.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments arrive on the first of every month. When the first falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the Social Security Administration (SSA) sends payment on the last business day before that date. For 2026, that rule shifts several payments by a day or two, and September's payment arrives in August entirely.

This guide covers every SSI payment date in 2026, the current federal benefit rates, what to do if a payment is late, and how multiple payments in one calendar month affect your SSI resource limit.

Complete SSI Payment Schedule for 2026

The table below shows every SSI payment date for 2026. Dates marked as "adjusted" fall before the first due to a weekend or federal holiday.

Three months stand out in 2026.

January: You received your January payment on December 31, 2025 because New Year's Day is a federal holiday. This means January 2026 has no SSI payment arrival within the calendar month itself.

August and September: August 2026 contains two SSI deposits. The regular August payment arrives August 3, and then September's payment comes early on August 31 because September 1 is Labor Day. You will see two deposits in your bank account during August.

November: The November payment arrives November 2 because November 1 is a Sunday.

Two Payments in One Month: Does It Affect Your SSI?

When two SSI payments land in the same calendar month, many recipients worry about the program's $2,000 resource limit ($3,000 for couples). The SSA addresses this directly: an SSI payment that arrives early because of a weekend or holiday is not counted as a resource until the following month. So the September payment arriving August 31 does not push you over the resource limit for August.

This rule applies only to SSI payments themselves. If you receive both SSI and Social Security retirement or SSDI benefits, your Social Security payment arrives on a separate schedule based on your birth date and is not affected by this early-payment rule.

2026 SSI Federal Benefit Rates

The SSA adjusts SSI payment amounts each January based on the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA). For 2026, the COLA was 2.5%, raising the federal benefit rate from the prior year.

Recipient CategoryMonthly Federal Benefit Rate (2026)
Individual$967
Eligible couple$1,450
Essential person$484

These are the federal maximums. Your actual payment may be lower if you have countable income, or higher if your state adds a state supplement on top of the federal benefit. States such as California, New York, and Washington add monthly supplements that can meaningfully increase total SSI payments.

SSI vs. Social Security Retirement: Different Payment Calendars

SSI follows one simple rule: payment on the first of the month (adjusted for weekends and holidays). Social Security retirement, SSDI, and Medicare-only payments follow a different schedule based on birth date.

Benefit TypePayment Rule
SSI1st of month (adjusted if weekend/holiday)
Social Security (born 1st to 10th)Second Wednesday of the month
Social Security (born 11th to 20th)Third Wednesday of the month
Social Security (born 21st to 31st)Fourth Wednesday of the month
Social Security (benefits before May 1997)3rd of the month

If you receive both SSI and Social Security, you get two separate deposits on two different dates each month.

How SSI Payments Are Delivered

SSA no longer mails paper checks to new recipients. All SSI payments go out via one of two methods.

Direct deposit: The fastest and most reliable method. Funds arrive in your bank account on the payment date. Set up or change your direct deposit information through your my Social Security account at ssa.gov, by calling 1-800-772-1213, or by visiting your local SSA office.

Direct Express card: If you do not have a bank account, SSA deposits payments onto a federal Direct Express debit card. The card works at ATMs, stores, and anywhere Mastercard is accepted.

What to Do If Your SSI Payment Is Late

SSI payments processed through direct deposit typically clear by 9 a.m. on the payment date. If your payment has not arrived by the end of the business day:

  1. Check your bank or Direct Express account online or by calling your bank's automated line.
  2. Confirm the payment date by checking the schedule above or visiting ssa.gov/pubs/calendar.htm.
  3. If the date is correct and the payment is not there, wait one full business day. Banking delays can push an overnight transfer to the next morning.
  4. If the payment is still missing after one business day, call SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY: 1-800-325-0778), Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  5. Have your Social Security number and bank account information ready when you call.

Do not report a missing payment before the scheduled date. Early-arrival months can create confusion about which month a deposit covers.

Changes That Affect Your SSI Payment Amount

SSA recalculates your SSI payment whenever your income or living situation changes. Common changes that reduce your monthly benefit include:

  • Starting a part-time or full-time job
  • Receiving wages, gifts, or in-kind support (food or shelter provided by others)
  • Moving in with someone who pays for your housing
  • Receiving a lump-sum payment such as an inheritance or personal injury settlement

Changes that may increase your benefit include stopping work, losing other income sources, or qualifying for a state supplement for the first time.

You are required to report most changes to SSA within 10 days of the end of the month in which the change happened. Failure to report can result in an overpayment, which SSA will collect from future benefits.

SSI Eligibility Basics

SSI covers three groups: adults 65 or older, blind individuals, and people with a disability. To qualify, you must also meet financial limits.

Income limit (2026): You generally cannot have more than $994 per month in countable income as an individual. Countable income is not the same as gross income. SSA excludes the first $20 of most income, the first $65 of earned income, and half of earned income above $65.

Resource limit: $2,000 for individuals, $3,000 for couples. Resources include bank accounts, cash, and most property. Your primary home and one vehicle are excluded.

Residency: You must be a U.S. citizen or qualifying non-citizen and a resident of one of the 50 states, D.C., or the Northern Mariana Islands.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does SSI pay in January 2026?

SSI's January 2026 payment was issued on December 31, 2025, because January 1 is a federal holiday. If you were expecting a deposit on January 1, it came a day early.

Will I get two SSI payments in August 2026?

Yes. The August payment arrives August 3 (because August 1 is a Saturday), and the September payment arrives August 31 (because September 1 is Labor Day). Two deposits in August is normal and expected.

Does receiving two SSI payments in one month count against the $2,000 resource limit?

No. SSA does not count an early payment as a resource in the month it arrives. The September payment deposited on August 31 counts as a September resource, not an August one.

What is the maximum SSI payment in 2026?

The federal maximum is $967 per month for an individual and $1,450 per month for an eligible couple. Some states add a supplement that raises total monthly payments above these amounts.

What day of the week does SSI pay?

SSI always pays on the first of the month, regardless of which day of the week that falls on. If the first is a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday, payment shifts to the previous business day. The day of the week varies by month.

How do I check my SSI payment date?

Visit ssa.gov/manage-benefits/view-benefit-payment-schedule to view your personal payment schedule. You can also call SSA at 1-800-772-1213 or create a my Social Security account online.

Can I change my SSI payment to direct deposit?

Yes. Call SSA at 1-800-772-1213, log in to your my Social Security account at ssa.gov, or visit your local SSA office. Direct deposit is the fastest way to receive your payment.

Does my SSI amount change every year?

SSA adjusts the federal benefit rate each January based on the COLA. The 2026 COLA was 2.5%, bringing the individual rate to $967 per month. Your actual payment also changes if your income or living situation changes during the year.

What if I receive both SSI and Social Security?

You will receive two separate deposits each month on different dates. Your SSI payment arrives on or before the first of the month. Your Social Security payment arrives on the second, third, or fourth Wednesday of the month, depending on your birth date.
