Colorado SNAP benefits load onto a Colorado Quest Card each month and can only be spent on food and a short list of food-related items at SNAP-authorized grocery stores, convenience stores, farmers markets, and participating online retailers. The amount you get depends on your household size and income. For federal fiscal year 2027, which runs October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027, the maximum monthly allotment runs from $306 for one person to $1,841 for eight people, with $225 added for each additional person. Colorado also layers on two produce incentive programs that can add up to $60 a month plus $20 a day in extra fruit and vegetable buying power on top of your regular benefit.
This page covers what the benefit itself pays for once you are approved. If you are trying to find out whether you qualify or what the income limits are, see Colorado SNAP Eligibility 2026. For your exact monthly deposit date, see Colorado EBT Deposit Schedule 2026. You can also check SNAP alongside other Colorado programs on our Colorado benefits page.
What Colorado SNAP Benefits Cover
Your Colorado Quest Card works like a prepaid debit card, and federal rules set what it can buy no matter which state issued it. Approved purchases include:
- Fruits and vegetables, fresh, frozen, canned, or dried
- Meat, poultry, and fish
- Dairy products, including milk, cheese, yogurt, and eggs
- Breads, cereals, rice, pasta, and dry goods
- Snack foods, crackers, and non-alcoholic beverages
- Juice that is more than 50% fruit or vegetable juice, and bottled water
- Infant formula and baby food
- Bakery items such as cakes, as long as they are not sold hot
- Seeds and plants that produce food for your household to eat
That last item surprises people: a packet of tomato seeds or a pepper seedling is an approved SNAP purchase.
What the Colorado Quest Card Does Not Cover
Your card cannot be used for:
- Alcohol, tobacco products, or vapes
- Vitamins, supplements, or medicine, including anything sold with a Supplement Facts label
- Hot food sold ready to eat, such as rotisserie chicken from the hot case or a deli sandwich made to order
- Food eaten inside the store
- Pet food
- Cleaning supplies, paper products, and other household items
- Personal care items, including soap, shampoo, diapers, and wipes
- Live animals, other than shellfish and fish removed from water at the point of sale
- Delivery fees, service charges, and tips on online grocery orders
The hot food rule causes the most confusion. A cold rotisserie chicken from the refrigerated case is eligible. The same chicken under a heat lamp is not.
Colorado's Two Produce Bonus Programs
Colorado is more generous than most states on fruit and vegetable incentives, and the two programs stack. Neither needs a separate application.
Colorado SNAP Produce Bonus
The Colorado SNAP Produce Bonus is run by the Colorado Department of Human Services with Nourish Colorado. When you buy eligible fruits and vegetables with your Quest Card at a participating retailer, the state automatically loads a dollar-for-dollar match back onto your EBT card, up to $60 a month. There is no sign-up and no voucher. If you receive SNAP in Colorado, you are already enrolled. The bonus dollars that come back can be spent on any SNAP-eligible food, not just produce.
Double Up Food Bucks Colorado
Double Up Food Bucks matches SNAP spending dollar for dollar, up to $20 a day, at more than 100 participating grocery stores and farmers markets statewide. The match comes as a voucher or store coupon rather than EBT credit, and it is restricted: at grocery stores it buys fresh produce and dry beans, and at farmers markets it buys Colorado-grown produce plus food-producing seeds and plants. Voucher expiration varies by retailer, so check the date printed on yours. Most participating farmers markets run May through October or November.
Colorado SNAP Maximum Monthly Allotments, FY2027
The U.S. Department of Agriculture sets the maximum allotment each federal fiscal year. The figures below are the 48 states and District of Columbia column, which is what applies in Colorado, and they are in effect from October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027.
| Household Size | Maximum Monthly Allotment |
|---|
| 1 | $306 |
| 2 | $562 |
| 3 | $808 |
| 4 | $1,023 |
| 5 | $1,217 |
| 6 | $1,463 |
| 7 | $1,616 |
| 8 | $1,841 |
| Each additional person | +$225 |
The maximum is a ceiling, not a standard payment. It is what a household with zero net income receives. Most approved Colorado households get less, because the formula subtracts a share of net income from the maximum.
Minimum Benefit
A one or two person household in Colorado that qualifies for any SNAP at all must be paid at least $25 a month for FY2027, even when the formula produces a smaller figure. The minimum does not apply to households of three or more, which can be approved at $0 if their net income is high enough.
How Colorado Calculates Your Benefit Amount
Colorado SNAP is supervised by the Colorado Department of Human Services and administered by county departments of human services in all 64 counties. Your county caseworker runs the same federal formula:
Monthly benefit = maximum allotment for your household size minus 30% of your net monthly income
Net income is your gross monthly income after allowed deductions. For FY2027 those are:
| Deduction | FY2027 Amount |
|---|
| Standard deduction, household of 1 to 3 | $217 |
| Standard deduction, household of 4 | $229 |
| Standard deduction, household of 5 | $268 |
| Standard deduction, household of 6 or more | $308 |
| Earned income deduction | 20% of wages and self-employment income |
| Dependent care | Full cost of care that lets you work, train, or attend school |
| Excess shelter costs | Housing and utility costs above half of adjusted income, capped at $769 |
| Medical expenses, elderly or disabled member | Costs above $35 a month |
Two details change the math more than people expect. The $769 shelter cap does not apply at all if your household includes someone 60 or older or living with a disability, so high Front Range rents can produce a much larger deduction for those households. And since July 4, 2025, internet and broadband costs no longer count toward the shelter or utility deduction anywhere in the country.
Worked Example
A single renter in Denver earning $1,600 a month with $1,200 in rent and utilities:
- Gross monthly income: $1,600
- Earned income deduction, 20% of $1,600: minus $320
- Standard deduction for a household of 1: minus $217
- Adjusted income: $1,063
- Half of adjusted income: $531.50
- Shelter costs above half of adjusted income: $1,200 minus $531.50 equals $668.50, which is under the $769 cap, so all of it is deductible
- Net monthly income: $1,063 minus $668.50 equals $394.50
- 30% of net income: about $118
- Benefit: $306 maximum minus $118 equals about $188 a month
This is an illustration, not a quote. Your county runs the exact calculation using verified figures, and small differences change the result. Reporting your rent, utility costs, childcare, and medical expenses accurately is the biggest lever you have on your monthly amount.
Why Colorado's Eligibility Rules Matter to Your Amount
Colorado uses Broad-Based Categorical Eligibility with a gross income limit of 200% of the federal poverty level, well above the 130% federal default, and Colorado does not apply an asset test to most SNAP households. A household under the state's gross limit is categorically eligible and skips the separate net income test. That affects whether you qualify, not how much you get: your benefit is still calculated from net income using the deductions above. Full income limits are on our Colorado SNAP eligibility page.
For the small number of Colorado households that are not categorically eligible, the federal asset limits still apply:
| Household Type | Federal Asset Limit |
|---|
| Most households | $3,000 |
| Household with a member 60 or older, or disabled | $4,750 |
The home you live in and most retirement accounts do not count as assets.
Can You Buy Hot Food With Colorado SNAP?
Not currently. Colorado is not one of the states operating the federal Restaurant Meals Program, which lets older adults, people with disabilities, and people experiencing homelessness buy hot prepared meals with SNAP at approved restaurants. Senate Bill 25-169 directed the state to apply to USDA for the program by January 1, 2026 and to publish an implementation plan within six months of federal approval. As of October 2026 the program is not live in Colorado and no launch date has been published.
Buying Groceries Online With a Colorado Quest Card
Colorado allows SNAP purchases online at participating retailers, including Amazon, Walmart, King Soopers, and Safeway. You enter your EBT card number at checkout the way you would a debit card, though some retailers handle payment at pickup instead.
SNAP pays only for the eligible food in the order. Delivery fees, service charges, bag fees, and tips have to come from another payment method, which is why curbside pickup is often cheaper.
When Colorado SNAP Benefits Arrive
Colorado issues SNAP between the 1st and the 10th of each month, on a date set by the last digit of the primary applicant's Social Security number. An SSN ending in 1 pays on the 1st and an SSN ending in 0 pays on the 10th. Your date does not shift for weekends or holidays and it repeats every month for as long as your case stays open. The full table and 2026 calendar are on our Colorado EBT deposit schedule page.
Benefits roll over. Anything you do not spend stays on the card and combines with next month's deposit. Under federal EBT rules, an account with no transactions for 274 days, about nine months, can have its remaining balance removed, so using the card at least once every nine months protects the balance.
Checking Your Balance
- ebtEDGE app or ebtedge.com: the official cardholder portal. Register with the 16-digit number on the front of your card.
- By phone: Colorado EBT Customer Service at 1-888-328-2656, automated and available 24 hours a day for balance and PIN. TTY 1-800-659-2656.
- MyCOBenefits app or Colorado PEAK: for case status, reported changes, and renewal notices.
- At checkout: most store receipts print your remaining balance, and Quest-logo ATMs will run a balance inquiry.
Call 1-888-328-2656 immediately if your card is lost, stolen, or shows transactions you did not make.
Summer EBT for Colorado Children
Colorado participates in Summer EBT, also called SUN Bucks, which pays $120 per eligible school-age child for groceries during summer break. Households already receiving SNAP, Colorado Works, or Medicaid are generally enrolled automatically, with the benefit loaded onto the existing Quest Card. Issuance for 2026 began in late May. The spending rules are the same as SNAP, so no hot food and no restaurants. Keep your mailing address current in Colorado PEAK, because CDHS uses case contact information to issue and notify.
How Long Colorado SNAP Lasts Before You Renew
Most Colorado households are certified for 12 months at a time, and households where every member is elderly or has a disability can receive a longer certification period of up to 24 months. Your county mails a redetermination packet roughly 30 days before the period ends, asking for updated income, rent, utility costs, household composition, and expenses. You can complete it through Colorado PEAK, by phone, or in person at your county office. Submitting it late means benefits stop until the paperwork is processed, and a gap is not back-paid automatically.
One rule can end coverage mid-certification. Adults 18 to 64 with no child under 14 in the household are generally limited to 3 months of SNAP in a 3-year period unless they work or train at least 20 hours a week, receive unemployment benefits, or qualify for another exemption. Pregnancy is an exemption. This rule has applied nationwide since July 4, 2025, and as of October 1, 2026 Colorado has no statewide waiver and no county-level waivers from it, so it applies across the state. If you are in that age range without a young child at home, ask your county worker how your hours are counted and reported. Lost documentation causes more cutoffs than actually failing the rule.
Non-citizen household members are rechecked against the 2025 federal eligibility rules at recertification. The categories that qualify changed in 2025, and a household can lose one member's benefit while the rest of the household keeps its own, so read the status rules on our Colorado SNAP eligibility page before your renewal interview.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I buy hot food with my Colorado Quest Card?
No. Hot prepared food sold ready to eat is not an eligible SNAP purchase in Colorado. The state was directed by Senate Bill 25-169 to apply to USDA for the federal Restaurant Meals Program, which would allow it for older adults, people with disabilities, and people experiencing homelessness, but as of October 2026 the program is not operating in Colorado.
How much SNAP will I actually get in Colorado?
The maximum for FY2027 is $306 for one person and $1,023 for a household of four, but most households receive less. Your county subtracts 30% of your net monthly income from the maximum for your household size. A one or two person household that qualifies gets at least $25.
What is the Colorado SNAP Produce Bonus and do I have to sign up?
It is a state program that automatically adds a dollar-for-dollar match, up to $60 a month, back onto your EBT card when you buy eligible fruits and vegetables with SNAP at a participating retailer. There is no application. If you receive SNAP in Colorado you are already eligible, and the bonus dollars can be spent on any SNAP-eligible food.
Can I use Double Up Food Bucks and the Produce Bonus at the same time?
Yes. They are separate programs and they stack. Double Up matches SNAP spending up to $20 a day in vouchers for fresh produce and dry beans at more than 100 participating stores and farmers markets, on top of the Produce Bonus credit that goes back on your card.
Do unused Colorado SNAP benefits expire?
They carry over month to month. The balance is only at risk if the account goes 274 days, about nine months, with no transactions at all, in which case the remaining funds can be removed.
Can I buy groceries online with Colorado SNAP?
Yes, at participating retailers including Amazon, Walmart, King Soopers, and Safeway. Your Quest Card pays for eligible food only. Delivery fees, service charges, and tips require a separate payment method, so pickup orders avoid a cost that SNAP cannot cover.
Does my Colorado SNAP amount change if my rent goes up?
It can. Housing and utility costs above half of your adjusted income are deductible, up to $769 a month for most households and with no cap at all if someone in the household is 60 or older or has a disability. Report a rent increase to your county, because a higher shelter deduction lowers your net income and raises your benefit. Internet and broadband costs no longer count toward that deduction.
Does getting SNAP in Colorado mean my kids get Summer EBT too?
Usually. Colorado households on SNAP are generally enrolled automatically, and the $120 per eligible school-age child loads onto the same Quest Card. Keep your mailing address current in Colorado PEAK so notices reach you.
