Alabama does not pay a general SSI state supplement. If you receive Supplemental Security Income and live in your own home or apartment in Alabama, your entire monthly check comes from the federal government: up to $994 for an individual and $1,491 for an eligible couple in 2026. Alabama does operate a small optional state supplement, but it reaches only a few hundred people statewide, and it applies only to recipients in specific care settings such as a licensed personal care home, a licensed adult foster home, or a cerebral palsy treatment center, with physician-recommended in-home care.
That distinction matters because national charts often list Alabama as a "supplement state" without explaining how narrow the program is. Roughly 138,832 Alabamians received SSI in December 2025 according to Social Security Administration county data. The state supplement was reported as reaching 166 people in the most recent federal state-by-state report, with total state spending of about $119,913 for the year. For practical purposes, if you are reading this at home, the federal rate is your rate.

2026 Federal SSI Payment Amounts in Alabama
The Social Security Administration applies a cost of living adjustment each January. The 2026 COLA was 2.8 percent, which raised the federal benefit rate from $967 to $994 for an individual and from $1,450 to $1,491 for a couple.
| Category | 2025 Monthly Rate | 2026 Monthly Rate |
|---|
| Individual | $967 | $994 |
| Eligible couple | $1,450 | $1,491 |
| Essential person | $484 | $498 |
These are maximums, not typical payments. Any countable income you have reduces the check dollar for dollar after SSA applies its exclusions. That is why Alabama's average monthly SSI payment runs well below the maximum. Dividing the December 2025 statewide payment total of about $102.2 million by 138,832 recipients gives an average of roughly $736 per month.
The resource limits did not change with the COLA. They remain $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a couple, and they have been frozen at those figures since 1989.

The Alabama Optional State Supplement, Explained
Alabama's optional state supplement dates to January 1, 1974 and is authorized under Title 38 of the Code of Alabama. It is funded entirely with state dollars and administered by county Departments of Human Resources rather than by Social Security. Applications are typically initiated through county health departments or the Alabama Department of Senior Services.
The program is not a general cash add-on. To qualify, a recipient must be in one of a short list of living arrangements and must be receiving what the state calls independent home-life care or specialized home-life care. The rules attached to that care are strict:
- A licensed physician must recommend the care
- Someone must actually provide the care and be paid for it
- The care provider cannot be an immediate relative
- The provider must be employed by a certified home health agency
The most recent payment levels published in the federal state-by-state report on SSI supplementation are shown below. Alabama sets its own amounts and can revise them, so treat these as the published federal reference rather than a current quote. Confirm your figure with your county DHR office.
| Living arrangement | State supplement, individual | State supplement, couple |
|---|
| In-home care in a private home or personal care home, level A | $60 | $120 |
| In-home care in a private home or personal care home, level B | $56 | $112 |
| Licensed foster home with in-home or specialized care | $110 | $220 |
| Cerebral palsy treatment center (disabled) | $196 | $392 |
A few definitions the state uses:
- Personal care home: a facility caring for four or more unrelated people, licensed by the Alabama Department of Public Health
- Foster home: an adult foster home licensed or approved by Alabama DHR
- Cerebral palsy treatment center: a licensed domiciliary care facility for cerebral palsy treatment
One useful wrinkle: the supplement is not limited to people who receive a federal SSI check. Alabama also pays some people who meet the state's criteria but whose income is too high for federal SSI. In that case the state pays the difference between countable income and the living arrangement benefit level.

What Alabama Gives SSI Recipients Instead of Cash
Alabama's supplement is thin, but SSI approval unlocks a stack of other state-administered help.
Automatic Medicaid
Alabama is a Section 1634 state. Social Security determines Medicaid eligibility for SSI recipients on the state's behalf, so an approved SSI application is also an approved Medicaid application. There is no separate form and no second interview. Coverage generally starts with your SSI eligibility.
This is worth more than most state supplements. Alabama has not expanded Medicaid, so adults without children who are not disabled generally cannot get Medicaid at any income. SSI approval is one of the few doors into full Medicaid coverage in the state.
SNAP food assistance
SSI does not disqualify you from Alabama's Food Assistance program. SSI counts as unearned income in the SNAP calculation, but households where every member receives SSI or another means-tested payment are categorically eligible in most cases. Apply through Alabama DHR at dhr.alabama.gov or your county DHR office.
Medicare Savings Programs
If you are 65 or older, or have been on SSDI for 24 months, you may have Medicare alongside SSI. Alabama runs QMB, SLMB, and QI, and Alabama is one of a minority of states with no asset test for these programs, so only income matters.
| Program | 2026 monthly income limit, individual | 2026 monthly income limit, couple | What it pays |
|---|
| QMB | Up to $1,350 | Up to $1,824 | Part A and Part B premiums, deductibles, copays |
| SLMB | $1,350 to $1,616 | $1,824 to $2,184 | Part B premium |
| QI | $1,616 to $1,816 | $2,184 to $2,455 | Part B premium |

Long-term care Medicaid
If you move into a nursing facility, Alabama uses an income cap of three times the federal benefit rate, which works out to $2,982 per month in 2026. Alabama is a strict income-cap state with no medically needy spend-down, so income above that line requires a qualified income trust. Residents keep a personal needs allowance of $30 per month, the minimum federal law permits.
Energy and utility help
Alabama's LIHEAP program, run through ADECA and local community action agencies, helps with heating and cooling bills. The Lifeline program discounts phone or internet service, and SSI receipt is a qualifying program for Lifeline.

How to Apply for SSI in Alabama
SSI is federal, so you apply through Social Security, not through any Alabama agency.
- Gather documents. Social Security number, birth certificate, proof of citizenship or qualifying immigration status, bank statements, information about any income, and the names and contact details of every doctor, hospital, and clinic that has treated you.
- Start the application. Go to ssa.gov/apply, call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), or make an appointment at an Alabama field office. Some adults can complete part of the SSI application online; others start online and finish by phone or in person.
- Complete the disability report if you are applying based on disability rather than age. This is where your medical evidence goes.
- Wait for the state agency review. Alabama's Disability Determination Service (DDS) makes the medical decision on SSA's behalf, working from your medical records. Initial decisions commonly take five to eight months.
- Appeal if denied. You have 60 days from the date on your denial notice to request reconsideration. Most initial applications are denied, and many approvals happen at the hearing level.
Asking about the state supplement
The state supplement is a separate ask. Contact your county Department of Human Resources, or call Alabama DHR at 334-242-1310, and ask about state supplementation for your living arrangement. If you are in a personal care home or adult foster home, the facility administrator usually knows whether the residents there receive it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Alabama pay a state supplement to SSI recipients?
Only in narrow circumstances. Alabama has no general supplement for SSI recipients living independently. It pays a small optional supplement, historically $56 to $196 per month for an individual, to people in licensed personal care homes, licensed adult foster homes, or cerebral palsy treatment centers who receive physician-recommended in-home care from a certified agency.
What is the maximum SSI payment in Alabama for 2026?
$994 per month for an individual and $1,491 per month for an eligible couple. Those are the federal maximums, and for most Alabama recipients they are also the state maximums because no state money is added.
Why is my Alabama SSI check less than $994?
Countable income reduces your payment. SSA excludes the first $20 of most income and the first $65 of earnings plus half of the rest, then subtracts what remains from $994. Living in someone else's household without paying your share of food and shelter can also cut your payment by up to one third of the federal rate.
Does Alabama SSI include Medicaid automatically?
Yes. Alabama is a Section 1634 state, so Social Security makes the Medicaid decision when it approves SSI. You do not file a separate Alabama Medicaid application.
How does Alabama compare with other Southern states?
Mississippi and Tennessee pay no optional state supplement at all. Texas pays a small supplement limited to Medicaid-funded long-term care facilities. Georgia's supplement is a flat amount of roughly $20. Alabama sits in the same tier: technically a supplement state, functionally federal-only for people living at home.
Can I get the Alabama supplement if my income is too high for federal SSI?
Possibly. Alabama pays some people who meet the state's criteria and living arrangement rules but whose countable income exceeds the federal SSI limit. In that case the state pays the gap between countable income and the benefit level for that living arrangement. Ask your county DHR office.
Does the supplement come in my Social Security deposit?
No. Alabama administers its own supplement, so it is issued by the state, not bundled into your federal SSI payment. States where SSA administers the supplement pay it in one combined deposit, but Alabama is not one of them.
