SSI State Supplement Payment in Maine 2026: How Much You Get

Maine's SSI state supplement ranges from $8 to $234 a month depending on living arrangement. See the 2026 amounts by code, who qualifies, and how to apply.

Maine pays an SSI state supplement, and the amount depends entirely on where you live. Most recipients living on their own get $10 a month on top of the federal SSI check. People living in another person's household get $8. But people in licensed residential settings get far more: $49 in a state assisted adult foster home, $217 in a flat rate boarding home, and $234 in an adult family care home or cost reimbursed boarding home. The amounts are set in Maine rule and do not rise with the annual cost of living adjustment. Only the federal portion does.

Maine's supplement is one of the least-explained in the country because the numbers are not published on a friendly benefits page. They sit in Part 11 of the MaineCare Eligibility Manual, 10-144 C.M.R. Chapter 332, in a section on living arrangement codes lettered A through I. This guide pulls those figures out and explains which one applies to you, how the payment reaches you, and the situation where you can get the state supplement even if Social Security turns you down for SSI.

The 2026 Federal SSI Amounts Maine Builds On

Social Security applies a cost of living adjustment every January. The 2026 COLA was 2.8 percent, which lifted the federal benefit rate from $967 to $994 for an individual and from $1,450 to $1,491 for an eligible couple.

Category2025 Monthly Rate2026 Monthly Rate
Individual$967$994
Eligible couple$1,450$1,491
Essential person$484$498

Resource limits did not move. They stay at $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a couple, the same levels since 1989. For a fuller walkthrough of what counts as income and what SSA excludes, see our guide to Maine SSI income limits for 2026.

Maine State Supplement Amounts by Living Arrangement

Part 11, Section 5 of the MaineCare Eligibility Manual assigns every recipient a living arrangement code borrowed from SSI. The supplement attaches to the code, not to your income. Code B is not in use.

CodeLiving arrangementIndividualCouple
ALiving alone or with others, including with an ineligible spouse, and minor children living with parents$10.00$15.00 ($7.50 each)
CLiving in the household of another$8.00$12.00 ($6.00 each)
DState or waiver state adult foster home$49.00 max$273.00 max
EFlat rate boarding home$217.00 max$590.00 max
FAdult family care home$234.00 max$636.00 max
GCost reimbursed boarding home$234.00 max$636.00 max
HMedical institution, 30 or more consecutive days$10.00$20.00
IResidential care facility$10.00$15.00 ($7.50 each)

Two rules govern how those numbers actually pay out.

Codes A, C, H and I are fixed. If you qualify for the supplement at all, you get the full listed amount. It does not slide with income.

Codes D, E, F and G are maximums. If you receive SSI, you get the maximum. If your income is too high for SSI but still low enough for the state supplement, the payment shrinks based on your countable income.

One detail catches people in adult foster homes. Part 12 of the manual splits these into two groups. Residents of a "state assisted" adult foster home are potentially eligible for the $49 supplement. Residents of a "private" adult foster home, meaning one where the resident is enrolled in the Office of Aging and Disability Services home and community based waiver, are potentially eligible for $10 instead. Same type of home, different supplement, based on how the placement is classified.

What Your Total Monthly Check Looks Like in 2026

These figures assume you qualify for the full federal SSI payment with no countable income reducing it.

Living arrangementFederal SSIMaine supplementTotal
Living alone or with others (A)$994$10$1,004
Household of another (C)About $663$8About $671
State assisted adult foster home (D)$994$49$1,043
Flat rate boarding home (E)$994$217$1,211
Adult family care home (F)$994$234$1,228
Cost reimbursed boarding home (G)$994$234$1,228
Residential care facility (I)$994$10$1,004

Code C is lower on the federal side because SSA applies the one-third reduction rule when you live in someone else's household and they provide your food and shelter. That reduction cuts the federal benefit rate by roughly a third before the $8 supplement is added.

Code H is the outlier and is left out of the table above on purpose. If you are in a medical institution where Medicaid pays more than half the cost of your care, federal SSI drops to a personal needs allowance of $30 a month. Adding Maine's $10 brings the total to about $40. That is a spending allowance for personal items, not a living allowance, because the facility is covering room, board and care.

How Maine Pays It, and Why It Is Not in Your Social Security Deposit

Twelve states let Social Security administer their supplement and fold it into one combined federal check. Maine is not one of them. Maine runs its own program through the Office for Family Independence, which means the supplement arrives as a separate state payment by check, direct deposit, or EBT card.

There is a consequence to that which surprises people. Under Part 11, Section 10 of the manual, when State Supplement benefits are spent using an EBT card, they carry the same purchase restrictions that apply to TANF benefits under Maine law. Federal SSI benefits do not carry those restrictions. If you take the supplement as direct deposit or a paper check instead of EBT, the restrictions do not apply either.

The supplement is effective the same month as your SSI payment. For living arrangements A, C, D and E, the first supplement payment covers the month after the month you applied or the month you became eligible, whichever is later. For cost reimbursed boarding homes, adult family care homes and residential care facilities, it starts the month after the decision is made, so a June approval means a July check.

The Part Almost Nobody Knows: State Supplement Without SSI

Maine's rule contains a real opening. SSI counts in-kind support and maintenance, meaning free or discounted food and housing someone gives you. Maine's State Supplement does not count it. Part 11 states this plainly: if you are ineligible for SSI because in-kind support pushed you over the line, you may still be eligible for the State Supplement.

A second group qualifies too. People denied SSI because of the 1996 non-citizen eligibility rules can apply directly to Maine DHHS for a State Supplement payment. In that case the payment is calculated as the difference between countable income and the maximum SSI level plus the supplement for your living arrangement, and no separate SSI determination is needed.

For these state-only cases, Maine applies its own disregards on top of the federal $20 general income exclusion:

DisregardAmount
Federal general income disregard$20
Maine state disregard, individual$55
Maine state disregard, couple$80

The $55 state disregard does not apply to living arrangements D, E, F, G and I. The manual's own guidance is that if your countable income is below the SSI limit for your living arrangement plus $20, you should apply for SSI. If it is above that but below the State Supplement income limit, which is the SSI limit plus the supplement amount, you can apply at DHHS for the State Supplement alone.

One caution on work income. Part 11 excludes applicants engaged in substantial gainful activity from the State Supplement, and the dollar figure printed in the rule text is badly out of date. SSA's 2026 substantial gainful activity amount is $1,690 a month, or $2,830 if you are statutorily blind. Ask OFI which figure they are applying to your case before assuming you are over.

How to Get the Maine State Supplement

Step 1: Apply for SSI with Social Security first. If you are financially eligible for SSI, Maine requires you to apply for and receive it. Call SSA at 1-800-772-1213, apply online at ssa.gov, or visit a Maine field office. Full details on the federal side are in our Maine SSI eligibility guide.

Step 2: Apply through Maine DHHS. Use MyMaineConnection.gov, the Office for Family Independence online portal, or submit a paper application to an OFI office. The OFI Eligibility Call Center is 1-855-797-4357, Monday through Friday.

Step 3: Report your living arrangement accurately. This is the single field that determines your amount. A resident of an adult family care home who is coded as living with others loses $224 a month.

Step 4: Report any move within 10 days. If you move to a living arrangement with a higher supplement, the increase can be backdated up to three months from the month you reported the move. If you move to a lower one, the decrease takes effect after timely notice. The manual's own example: report a move out of a cost reimbursed boarding home on July 2 and the August payment drops to $10, but report it on July 22 and September is the first reduced month.

Step 5: Keep MaineCare in mind. Recipients of SSI or State Supplement are automatically covered as Categorically Needy under MaineCare. No separate Medicaid application is needed, including for home and community based waiver programs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is the Maine SSI state supplement in 2026?

It ranges from $8 to $234 a month for an individual. Most recipients living independently receive $10. People living in another person's household receive $8. People in licensed residential settings receive $49, $217, or $234 depending on the facility type. Maine's amounts are fixed in rule and did not change with the 2026 COLA.

Does Maine add the supplement to my Social Security check?

No. Maine administers its own supplement through the Department of Health and Human Services, Office for Family Independence. It comes as a separate payment by check, direct deposit, or EBT card, not bundled into the federal SSI deposit the way it is in states like Vermont or Rhode Island.

What is the maximum total SSI payment in Maine for 2026?

For someone living on their own with no countable income, $1,004 a month ($994 federal plus $10 state). Someone in an adult family care home or cost reimbursed boarding home can reach $1,228, though in those settings most of the money goes toward the cost of care.

Can I get the Maine State Supplement if Social Security denied me SSI?

Sometimes. Maine does not count in-kind support and maintenance, so if free food or housing from someone else is what disqualified you from SSI, you may still qualify for the state supplement. People denied SSI under the 1996 non-citizen rules can also apply directly to DHHS. Both paths require applying to Maine DHHS, not to Social Security.

Does the supplement go up with the cost of living adjustment?

No. The state amounts in the MaineCare Eligibility Manual are flat dollar figures that have held steady for years. What rises each January is the federal SSI portion of your total. In 2026 that was a 2.8 percent increase.

Do I automatically get MaineCare if I receive the state supplement?

Yes. Individuals and couples who are aged, blind, or have disabilities and who receive SSI or State Supplement are automatically covered as Categorically Needy under MaineCare unless they refuse to assign their rights to medical payments. No separate application is required.

What happens to the supplement if my SSI stops?

If your SSI closes, the State Supplement generally ends too. There are two exceptions: you are eligible for a State Supplement only payment on your own, or you appeal the SSI closure on time and continue to meet all other eligibility rules.

What is the resource limit for the Maine State Supplement?

Federal SSI resource limits apply: $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a couple. Those figures have not been adjusted for inflation since 1989 and are unchanged for 2026.
