Michigan pays an SSI state supplement, but it does not arrive the way most people expect. For 2026, the State SSI Payment (SSP) is $14.00 a month for an individual in independent living and $21.00 a month for an eligible couple, and Michigan does not send it monthly. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services issues it quarterly, in March, June, September, and December, covering the three months that just ended. So an individual living independently receives roughly $42 four times a year, separate from the federal SSI check that arrives on the first of each month.
That quarterly schedule is the single most confusing thing about Michigan's supplement, and it is why many recipients assume they are not getting one at all.
Michigan SSI Payment Levels for 2026
These figures come from MDHHS Reference Table RFT 248, effective January 1, 2026. The federal column is the maximum Social Security Administration payment for someone with no other countable income. The state column is Michigan's supplement.
| Living Arrangement | Federal SSI (monthly) | Michigan State SSI Payment (monthly) | Total Maximum |
|---|
| Independent Living, individual | $994.00 | $14.00 | $1,008.00 |
| Independent Living, couple | $1,491.00 | $21.00 ($10.50 each) | $1,502.00 |
| Household of Another, individual | $662.67 | $9.33 | $672.00 |
| Household of Another, couple | $994.00 | $13.96 ($6.98 each) | $1,007.96 |
| Eligible Child, individual | $994.00 | $14.00 | $1,008.00 |
| Domiciliary Care, individual | $994.00 | $87.00 | $1,081.00 |
| Personal Care (Adult Foster Care), individual | $994.00 | $157.50 | $1,151.50 |
| Home for the Aged, individual | $994.00 | $179.30 | $1,173.30 |
| Institution or nursing home, individual | $30.00 | $7.00 | $37.00 |
A few notes on reading this table. "Household of Another" means you live in someone else's home and receive food or shelter from them, which triggers the federal one-third reduction. "Independent Living" is Michigan's term for everyone else living in the community, including renters and homeowners who pay their own way. The essential person payment, which applies in a small number of legacy cases, is $498.00 a month in 2026.
Michigan's state supplement amounts have not moved in years. The $14.00, $9.33, $21.00, and $13.96 figures were the same in 2024 and 2025. Only the federal column rises with the annual cost-of-living adjustment, which was 2.8 percent for 2026.
Who Actually Receives a Check From MDHHS
This is the part that trips people up. Michigan supplements SSI in every living arrangement listed above, but the state only mails the supplement in two of them.
Per MDHHS policy manual BEM 660, MDHHS issues the State SSI Payment directly to recipients in:
- Independent living
- Household of another
For domiciliary care, personal care and adult foster care, homes for the aged, institutions, and nursing homes, the Social Security Administration issues the state-funded portion along with the federal benefit. Those recipients get one combined check on the first of the month and never see a separate state payment. That is why RFT 248 shows a "-0-" in the State SSI Payment column for those categories. The money is there, it is simply bundled into the SSA payment.
So if you live in an adult foster care home in Michigan and you are wondering where your quarterly state check is, it is already inside your monthly SSI deposit.
How the Quarterly Payment Works
MDHHS runs the SSP payroll four times a year. Each payroll pays the quarter that just finished:
| Payroll Month | Covers |
|---|
| March | January, February, March |
| June | April, May, June |
| September | July, August, September |
| December | October, November, December |
The amount is the monthly supplement multiplied by the number of qualifying months in that quarter. For an individual in independent living with all three months qualifying, that is $14.00 x 3, or $42.00. For an eligible couple it is $63.00. For an individual in the household of another it is $27.99. Over a full year, independent living works out to $168.00.
Two rules from BEM 660 decide whether a month counts:
- You must have received a regular first-of-the-month federal SSI benefit for that month. If your federal SSI was $0 for a month because of earnings or other income, no state supplement is paid for that month.
- Retroactive and supplemental federal payments do not generate an SSP. Only recurring monthly benefits count.
There is also a specific exclusion for 1619(b) recipients, meaning people who work, have too much income for an SSI cash payment, and keep Medicaid coverage. They keep Medicaid but do not receive the State SSI Payment.
2026 Payment Dates by Recipient ID
MDHHS staggers the payroll by the last digit of your recipient ID. These electronic funds transfer dates come from MDHHS Reference Schedule RFS 106 for 2026.
| Recipient ID Ends In | March 2026 | June 2026 | September 2026 | December 2026 |
|---|
| 0 or 1 | 03-06 | 06-05 | 09-08 | 12-07 |
| 2 or 3 | 03-09 | 06-08 | 09-09 | 12-08 |
| 4 or 5 | 03-10 | 06-09 | 09-10 | 12-09 |
| 6 or 7 | 03-11 | 06-10 | 09-14 | 12-11 |
| 8 or 9 | 03-13 | 06-12 | 09-15 | 12-14 |
Payments go to the individual or to the payee account designated by SSA. If you have direct deposit set up with Social Security, the state supplement typically follows the same account. Paper warrants are still issued in some cases.
How to Apply for Michigan's SSI State Supplement
There is no separate application. This is the most common question and the answer is short: if you are approved for federal SSI and Social Security records show you living in Michigan in an independent living or household-of-another arrangement, MDHHS builds your SSP from SSA's data automatically.
What that means in practice:
- Apply for SSI through Social Security. File online at ssa.gov, call 1-800-772-1213, or make an appointment at a local Social Security field office. Michigan has no state-run SSI application.
- Report your living arrangement accurately to SSA. Your Michigan supplement amount is set entirely by the living arrangement code SSA assigns you. Moving from a relative's home into your own apartment changes both your federal check and your state supplement.
- Report address and banking changes to SSA, not just MDHHS. MDHHS pulls the payee account SSA has on file.
- Watch for the first quarterly payment. If you are approved in April, your first SSP appears in the June payroll, not immediately.
If your quarterly payment never arrives, is short, or the warrant is lost, contact your local MDHHS office. County offices process rewrites for undelivered, lost, stolen, or destroyed SSP warrants. The MDHHS assistance line is 1-855-275-6424.
If Your Payment Goes Down
When your quarterly State SSI Payment is lower than the previous quarter, MDHHS sends form DHS-430, Notice of State SSI Payment Change. That notice does three things: it gives advance notice of the reduction, it tells you the date your next reduced check arrives, and it explains your hearing rights, including the deadline by which a hearing request preserves your current payment level while the case is decided.
If you want to contest the change, ask your local MDHHS office for the Hearings Coordinator. Because the supplement follows your federal living arrangement, a drop usually means SSA reclassified you, often from independent living to household of another. Fixing the classification with SSA is frequently the faster path than a state hearing.
Income and Resource Limits That Control the Payment
Michigan does not run its own income test for the supplement. Your eligibility flows from federal SSI rules, which are identical in all 50 states.
| Rule | 2026 Figure |
|---|
| Federal benefit rate, individual | $994/month |
| Federal benefit rate, couple | $1,491/month |
| Resource limit, individual | $2,000 |
| Resource limit, couple | $3,000 |
| Substantial Gainful Activity, non-blind | $1,690/month |
| Substantial Gainful Activity, blind | $2,830/month |
| General income exclusion | First $20/month |
| Earned income exclusion | First $65, then half of the rest |
Your house, one vehicle, household goods, and most burial funds do not count toward the resource limit. For a full breakdown of how countable income is calculated in Michigan, see our guides on Michigan SSI eligibility and Michigan SSI income limits.
What SSI Approval Unlocks Beyond the Supplement
Fourteen dollars a month is real money for someone living on $994, but the supplement is not the valuable part of an SSI approval in Michigan. Michigan is a Section 1634 state, which means an SSI approval automatically enrolls you in Michigan Medicaid with no separate Medicaid application. If your SSI cash later stops because you went back to work, Section 1619(b) can keep that Medicaid coverage active even though the State SSI Payment does not continue.
SSI recipients are also categorically eligible for food assistance, so the standard gross income test is skipped, though you still have to apply separately through MI Bridges. Home heating help through the Michigan Home Heating Credit and MEAP, and phone or internet discounts through Lifeline, are also open to most SSI households. For a full picture of what else you may qualify for, see our Michigan benefits overview.
Adult Foster Care and Home for the Aged Residents
If you live in a licensed facility, Michigan's supplement is larger and it is built into your SSA check. The rules also spell out what you pay the facility and what stays in your pocket.
| Setting | Maximum Paid to Provider | Minimum Kept by Recipient | Total SSI Warrant |
|---|
| Domiciliary Care, individual | $1,037.00 | $44.00 | $1,081.00 |
| Personal Care, individual | $1,107.50 | $44.00 | $1,151.50 |
| Home for the Aged, individual | $1,129.30 | $44.00 | $1,173.30 |
The $44.00 a month incidental needs allowance is a floor, not a cap. If the actual cost of your care is below the maximum, or you have unearned income besides SSI, you keep more. Couples keep at least $88.00. Paying the facility is the responsibility of the recipient or the representative payee, not MDHHS.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much is the Michigan SSI state supplement in 2026?
$14.00 a month for an individual in independent living and $21.00 a month for an eligible couple ($10.50 each). For someone living in the household of another it is $9.33 a month for an individual and $13.96 for a couple. Residents of licensed care settings receive larger state-funded amounts, from $87.00 for domiciliary care to $179.30 for a home for the aged, paid inside the SSA check.
Why did I not get a state supplement check this month?
Michigan pays the supplement quarterly, not monthly. Checks are issued only in March, June, September, and December, and each one covers the three months that just ended. If you live in an adult foster care home, a home for the aged, or a nursing home, you will never see a separate check because SSA includes Michigan's share in your monthly SSI payment.
Do I have to apply for the Michigan State SSI Payment?
No. There is no state application. MDHHS builds the payment from Social Security's records once you are approved for federal SSI. Keep your living arrangement, address, and direct deposit information current with SSA, since MDHHS uses SSA data to issue the payment.
What is the total maximum SSI payment in Michigan for 2026?
$1,008.00 a month for an individual in independent living, combining the $994.00 federal benefit with the $14.00 state supplement. For an eligible couple it is $1,502.00. Your actual payment is lower if you have countable income.
Can I get the state supplement if I work?
Only for months in which you still receive a regular federal SSI payment. Once earnings reduce your federal SSI to $0, the State SSI Payment stops for those months. Michigan also does not issue SSP to 1619(b) recipients, who keep Medicaid after their cash benefit ends.
When exactly will my quarterly payment arrive?
It depends on the last digit of your recipient ID. In September 2026, IDs ending in 0 or 1 receive funds on September 8, 2 or 3 on September 9, 4 or 5 on September 10, 6 or 7 on September 14, and 8 or 9 on September 15. The same staggered pattern applies in March, June, and December.
My quarterly check was smaller than last time. What happened?
MDHHS sends form DHS-430, Notice of State SSI Payment Change, whenever the quarterly amount drops. The usual causes are a change in living arrangement code, or one or more months in the quarter where you did not receive a regular federal SSI payment. The notice states your hearing rights and the deadline for requesting a hearing that preserves your current payment level.
Does getting SSI in Michigan give me Medicaid automatically?
Yes. Michigan is a Section 1634 state, so SSI approval triggers Michigan Medicaid enrollment without a separate application. If your SSI cash payment ends because of work earnings, Section 1619(b) can keep your Medicaid active.
Where do these 2026 numbers come from?
The payment levels come from MDHHS Reference Table RFT 248, SSI Payment Levels, effective January 1, 2026. The quarterly schedule and 2026 payment dates come from MDHHS Reference Schedule RFS 106. The program rules come from MDHHS Bridges Eligibility Manual BEM 660, State SSI Payment. Federal benefit rates, resource limits, and SGA amounts reflect the Social Security Administration's 2026 figures after the 2.8 percent cost-of-living adjustment.
