SSI State Supplement Payment in Wyoming 2026: How Much You Get

Wyoming adds $20 a month to SSI, but only if SSI is your only income. Maximum 2026 payment is $1,014 for an individual. Who qualifies and how it arrives.

Wyoming pays a state supplement on top of Supplemental Security Income, and it is $20 a month. That brings the maximum monthly payment for a Wyoming individual with no other income to $1,014 in 2026, made up of the $994 federal benefit rate plus the state's $20. The catch is narrow and it disqualifies a lot of people: Wyoming's rule is that SSI must be your only source of income. A small Social Security Disability Insurance check, a pension, a few hundred dollars of wages, or any other countable income and the $20 goes away entirely. Unlike most states, Wyoming administers the payment itself through the Wyoming Department of Health rather than routing it through Social Security, so it can arrive as a separate deposit or a separate paper check. There is no application. This guide covers the exact rules, the living arrangements that qualify, and what happens when other income shows up.

Quick Answer: Wyoming SSI Supplement at a Glance

Every figure assumes the federal resource limits are met. The supplement is 100 percent state funded, and Wyoming's eligibility manual sets it at a flat $20 rather than a percentage of anything.

What an SSI State Supplement Is

Supplemental Security Income is a federal program run by the Social Security Administration for people who are 65 or older, blind, or living with a disability and who have limited income and resources. SSA sets a national federal benefit rate each January and adjusts it for inflation. States may add money on top, which is called a State Supplementary Payment or an optional state supplement. States fall into three groups:

  • SSA-administered. The state hands SSA the money and the rules, and the supplement rides inside your regular SSI deposit. California, Delaware, Hawaii, Iowa, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and the District of Columbia work this way.
  • State-administered. The state runs its own program, sets its own conditions, and pays you directly. Wyoming is in this group, alongside Kansas, Georgia, Idaho, Colorado, and most others.
  • No supplement at all. Arizona, Arkansas, Mississippi, North Dakota, Tennessee, and West Virginia pay nothing.

Wyoming's version is one of the smallest in the country that is still an actual payment, and it is tied to a condition almost no other state uses.

2026 Federal SSI Payment Amounts

SSA applied a 2.8 percent cost-of-living adjustment effective January 1, 2026. These figures set the base your Wyoming supplement sits on top of.

Wyoming's $20 Supplement: The Exact Rules

Wyoming's Eligibility Online Manual, section M1804, is the governing authority. It sets two conditions and one amount:

  1. The recipient's sole source of income is an SSI payment.
  2. The recipient resides in Wyoming.
  3. The payment is $20.00 monthly.

The statutory basis is Wyoming Statute 42-2-103 and 20 CFR 416.2001, with funding authorized under Senate Enrolled Act 43. The policy has been in effect since July 1, 2021 and the amount has not moved since: your federal check rises with the COLA every year, the $20 does not.

Wyoming pays by living arrangement code, the same codes SSA uses on your SSI record:

CodeLiving arrangementSupplement
AYour own household$20
BAnother person's household$20
CParent's household, child cases$20
DTitle XVI institutionGenerally none, federal payment capped at $30
BlankNon-Title XIX institutions and other situationsDetermined case by case

Unlike Montana or South Dakota, Wyoming does not pay a larger supplement to care facility residents. It pays the same flat $20 to people living independently and to people living in someone else's home, so if you live in your own place in Wyoming you are in the group the state actually pays.

The sole-income rule is the part that trips people up

Most states reduce a supplement when other income appears. Wyoming eliminates it. If SSA counts any income against your SSI other than the payment itself, you fail condition one and the state pays nothing.

Income that ends the $20:

  • An SSDI check of any size, including a concurrent payment small enough that you still receive SSI
  • Retirement or survivor Social Security benefits, a pension, or an annuity
  • Wages, if anything still counts after the $65 and one-half earned income exclusions
  • Unemployment compensation, child support, alimony, veterans benefits, and most outside cash

What does not end it: SNAP, Medicaid, LIEAP, housing subsidies, and free food and shelter in someone else's home. SSA handles that last one with the one-third reduction rather than as countable income, which is why living arrangement code B still receives the $20. A Wyoming resident living in a relative's home with free room and board takes a $331.33 federal reduction in 2026, down to $662.67, and still gets the state's $20 for a total of up to $682.67.

How the Payment Reaches You

Wyoming's Department of Health runs the supplement through an automated match against SSA data. Three practical consequences:

There is no separate application. The state identifies eligible recipients from information SSA already has. No form, and no Wyoming office accepts supplement applications.

It follows your SSI deposit method. The money is deposited into the same account your SSI payment goes to. If you use a Direct Express card or have no bank account, Wyoming mails a paper check instead, which means the state portion can arrive separately from the federal portion and on a different day.

A change in income cuts it off without warning. The match is automated and the rule is all-or-nothing, so starting a job or being approved for SSDI removes the $20 the month the other income counts. Report income changes to SSA promptly, since an unreported change produces an overpayment the state can recover.

If the $20 never appears and SSI is genuinely your only income, contact the Wyoming Department of Health, not SSA. SSA does not administer this payment and cannot add it to your record.

SSI Approval in Wyoming Comes With Automatic Medicaid

Wyoming is a Section 1634 state. It has an agreement with SSA under which SSI approval triggers Medicaid enrollment without a second application. SSA notifies the Wyoming Department of Health and coverage begins.

This is worth far more than the $20, and it is not automatic everywhere. Recipients in Idaho, Kansas, Nebraska, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Alaska must file a separate Medicaid application after SSI approval, and people there sometimes spend months uninsured because nobody told them. In Wyoming, coverage follows the award. Confirm it actually opened rather than assuming.

One Wyoming caveat: the state has not expanded Medicaid. That does not affect SSI recipients, who qualify through the aged, blind, and disabled pathway. It does mean that if your claim is denied and your income is very low, there may be no Medicaid category open to you at all, which leaves several thousand Wyoming adults in the coverage gap.

How to Apply for SSI in Wyoming

The federal claim is the whole process. The supplement attaches automatically afterward.

Step 1: Gather documents. Social Security number, birth certificate, proof of citizenship or eligible immigration status, bank statements and proof of all resources, records of any income, and the names, addresses, and phone numbers of every doctor, clinic, and hospital that has treated you.

Step 2: File the claim. Start at ssa.gov/apply, call SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), or make an appointment at one of Wyoming's six Social Security field offices: Casper, Cheyenne, Cody, Riverton, Rock Springs, and Sheridan. Given Wyoming distances, the phone and online paths usually beat driving.

Step 3: Complete the interview. SSA verifies income, resources, and living arrangement. Answer the living arrangement questions accurately. They decide whether you receive the full $994, the reduced $662.67, or the $30 institutional rate, and they set the code Wyoming reads.

Step 4: Medical review. If you are applying on the basis of disability or blindness, Wyoming's Disability Determination Services unit reviews your medical evidence. Initial decisions commonly take three to five months, and gaps in treatment records are the most common reason a valid claim stalls.

Step 5: Confirm Medicaid opened. Coverage should follow the SSI award automatically. Verify it in the Wyoming Eligibility System rather than waiting for a card.

Step 6: Watch the first two deposits. The $20 state portion may arrive separately. If SSI is your only income and it has not appeared after two full months, call the Wyoming Department of Health.

If you are denied, you have 60 days from the date on the notice to request reconsideration, then a hearing before an administrative law judge. Wyoming also runs a free SOAR program through the Department of Health's Behavioral Health Division, which trains caseworkers to help people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness assemble SSI and SSDI applications.

SSDI Recipients and the Wyoming Supplement

Social Security Disability Insurance is a separate, payroll-tax-funded program, and no state supplement attaches to it. Wyoming adds nothing to an SSDI check.

For people who receive both, Wyoming's rule produces a strange outcome. If your SSDI check is low enough that you also qualify for a concurrent SSI payment, you are an SSI recipient, but SSI is not your sole source of income, so Wyoming pays you $0. A neighbor with the same total income and no SSDI entitlement gets the $20.

If you are on SSDI only and your check is below $994, it is still worth filing for SSI. The federal top-up plus automatic Medicaid is worth far more than the supplement you will not receive. SSDI counts as unearned income for SSI and reduces the federal portion dollar for dollar after the $20 general income exclusion.

What Wyoming Offers SSI Recipients Beyond the $20

A $20 supplement makes the non-cash programs the real money. If you receive SSI in Wyoming, check every one of these:

Wyoming Medicaid. Automatic with SSI approval. Covers doctor visits, hospital care, prescriptions, and long-term services and supports. Apply or verify through the Wyoming Eligibility System at wesystem.wyo.gov.

SNAP. Administered by the Wyoming Department of Family Services. The federal fiscal year 2026 maximum allotment is $298 a month for a one-person household and $546 for two. Households in which every member receives SSI are generally categorically eligible, which skips the separate asset test.

LIEAP. Wyoming's Low Income Energy Assistance Program takes applications from October 1 through April 30 and covers natural gas, electricity, propane, coal, and wood heat. Households receiving SSI, SNAP, or TANF may be automatically income eligible. Apply at lieapwyo.org, call 1-800-246-4221, or email lieapinfo@wyo.gov. Given Wyoming winters, this is often worth several hundred dollars a season.

Medicare Savings Programs. If you have Medicare as well, Wyoming's QMB, SLMB, and QI programs pay your Part B premium and, at the QMB level, your Medicare cost sharing. The 2026 resource limits are approximately $9,950 for a single person and $14,910 for a couple, and all three levels automatically qualify you for Part D Extra Help. Apply through WES.

Nursing facility personal needs allowance. If Medicaid pays for your nursing facility care, your SSI drops to $30 a month and Wyoming Medicaid protects a personal needs allowance of approximately $50 a month. The 2026 income cap for Wyoming long-term care Medicaid is roughly $2,982 a month for a single applicant.

Lifeline. A federal discount on phone or internet service. SSI or Medicaid qualifies you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Wyoming pay an SSI state supplement in 2026?

Yes. Wyoming pays a flat $20 a month to SSI recipients whose only source of income is their SSI payment and who live in Wyoming. It is funded entirely with state dollars and administered by the Wyoming Department of Health.

What is the maximum SSI payment in Wyoming for 2026?

$1,014 a month for an individual living in their own household with no other income, which is the $994 federal benefit rate plus the $20 state supplement. An eligible couple receives $1,491 federally, plus approximately $20 from the state. Wyoming's manual publishes one $20 figure rather than a separate couple rate, so confirm your exact amount with the Department of Health.

Do I lose the supplement if I also get SSDI?

Yes. Wyoming's rule is that SSI must be your sole source of income. Any SSDI payment, no matter how small, ends the $20 entirely even though you remain eligible for SSI itself. The same applies to pensions, wages that survive the earned income exclusions, and most other cash income.

Do I have to apply for Wyoming's supplement?

No. The Wyoming Department of Health identifies eligible recipients automatically from information SSA already has and pays them without an application. There is no separate form and no state office that accepts supplement applications.

Will the supplement arrive with my SSI check?

Usually. The state deposits it into the same account that receives your SSI payment. If you use a Direct Express card or have no bank account, Wyoming mails a separate paper check that can arrive on a different day.

Why did the $20 not increase with the 2026 COLA?

The amount is set by Wyoming policy at a flat $20 and has not changed since the current policy took effect on July 1, 2021. The federal portion of your payment rose 2.8 percent in January 2026. The state portion did not move, and nothing indexes it to inflation.

Does SSI approval give me Wyoming Medicaid automatically?

Yes. Wyoming is a Section 1634 state, so SSA notifies the state and Medicaid coverage follows the SSI award without a second application. Verify the coverage actually opened instead of assuming it, particularly if a provider is waiting to bill.

Can I work and still receive SSI in Wyoming?

You can work and keep SSI, but working will almost certainly end the $20. SSA excludes the first $20 of most income, then $65 of earnings and half of everything above that, so an individual with no other income can earn roughly $2,073 a month before the federal payment reaches zero. Once any earnings count against your SSI, Wyoming's sole-income condition fails. For SSDI, the 2026 substantial gainful activity limit is $1,690 a month, or $2,830 if you are blind.

What happens to my SSI if I enter a nursing home in Wyoming?

For any full calendar month in a facility where Medicaid pays more than half the cost of your care, federal law limits SSI to $30 a month, and no state supplement is added. Wyoming Medicaid separately protects a personal needs allowance of approximately $50 a month for facility residents.

Where do the numbers on this page come from?

The federal benefit rate, the one-third reduction, the $30 institutional limit, the resource limits, and the work incentive figures come from the Social Security Administration's 2026 cost-of-living adjustment materials and SSI publications. The $20 amount, the sole-income condition, the living arrangement codes, the payment mechanism, and the statutory citations come from section M1804 of the Wyoming Department of Health's Eligibility Online Manual. SNAP allotments come from USDA fiscal year 2026 figures, and the LIEAP, Medicaid, and Medicare Savings Program details come from the Wyoming Department of Family Services and Department of Health. Verify your own amounts with SSA or the state, since eligibility is always determined by the agencies, not by an estimate.
