VA Disability Pay Dates 2027: Full Payment Schedule

See every VA disability payment date for 2027, why the schedule shifts around weekends and holidays, and when the new COLA increase shows up in your deposit.

VA disability compensation is deposited on the first business day of the month for the previous month's benefits, and 2027 follows that same rule with a few date shifts around weekends and federal holidays. Most 2027 payments land on the 1st of the month, but April, July, and December all move earlier because the 1st falls on a Saturday, a Sunday, or a day tied to the New Year's Day holiday. Below is the full 2027 VA disability pay calendar, along with what changes with the incoming cost of living adjustment (COLA).

How VA Disability Pay Dates Work

The VA does not pay disability compensation on a fixed date like the 15th or the 30th. Instead, it pays in arrears, meaning the deposit you receive covers the previous month, and it always lands on the first business day of the current month.

Two rules control the exact date every year:

  1. Payment normally arrives on the 1st of the month. If you were rated for compensation in March, the payment covering March benefits arrives on April 1.
  2. If the 1st falls on a weekend or federal holiday, payment moves to the last business day before it. The VA and Treasury do not push payments later, they always move them earlier so veterans are not left waiting through a holiday weekend.

This is why a handful of 2027 payments arrive on the 30th or 31st of the prior month instead of the 1st.

You’re probably leaving money on the table.

Two dates on this table are the ones veterans miss every year. The payment you receive at the very end of December 2026 is actually your January 2027 pay date arriving early because January 1, 2027 is a federal holiday. And the payment covering December 2027 benefits arrives on December 30, 2027, not December 31, because December 31, 2027 is itself observed as a federal holiday (New Year's Day 2028 falls on a Saturday, so the holiday is observed the Friday before). Two holiday shifts in the same calendar year is unusual, and it is worth marking both on your own calendar so a delayed-looking deposit does not catch you off guard.

The VA has not published an official 2027 pay chart as of this writing. The dates above are calculated using the VA's standard payment rules (first business day of the month, adjusted for weekends and the published 2027 federal holiday schedule from the Office of Personnel Management). Confirm the exact date closer to each month through VA.gov or your VA benefits letter.

The 2027 COLA and What It Means for Your Payment Amount

Every October, the Social Security Administration announces the annual cost of living adjustment, and the VA applies the same percentage to disability compensation rates. The 2027 COLA has not been finalized. As of mid-2026, early estimates from groups like The Senior Citizens League put the 2027 COLA in the range of approximately 3.8% to 3.9%, though the number can move up or down as inflation data comes in through the rest of the year. The official figure is expected to be announced around mid-October 2026.

Whatever the final percentage is, the timeline works the same way every year:

  • The new rate takes effect December 1, 2026.
  • Because VA pays in arrears, the first payment reflecting the new rate is the one covering December 2026 benefits, which (per the table above) is deposited December 31, 2026.
  • Every payment from that point through the end of 2027 reflects the new rate, unless Congress or the VA makes a mid-year adjustment, which is rare.

If your December 31, 2026 deposit looks the same as November's, check your VA.gov account or your award letter. The updated rate chart is typically posted in early December, and a delay in your bank crediting the deposit can also make the increase appear one business day late.

How to Check Your Own Payment Date and Amount

  1. Log in to VA.gov. Under "Disability compensation," you can view your current monthly payment amount and combined disability rating.
  2. Check your direct deposit information. Go to your VA.gov profile and confirm your bank account and routing number are current. A closed or changed account is the most common reason a payment is delayed.
  3. Set up or confirm direct deposit if you have not already. VA strongly prefers direct deposit over paper checks, and paper checks add several business days of mail time on top of the schedule above.
  4. Watch for the award letter after any rating change. If you had a claim decision, increase, or decrease processed recently, your award letter will show the effective date and new monthly amount, which may differ from the standard COLA table until it is applied.
  5. Contact the VA if a payment is more than a few business days late. Call 1-800-827-1000 or use the secure message feature on VA.gov. Delays beyond the scheduled date are usually a banking issue, not a VA processing issue.

Why Some Veterans See Different Dates

Not every veteran receives compensation on the general schedule above. A few situations shift the date:

  • New claims and retroactive back pay are processed on their own timeline once a claim is approved, separate from the monthly recurring schedule.
  • Combined VA and military retirement pay (concurrent receipt or CRSC) can follow the Defense Finance and Accounting Service schedule for the military portion, which sometimes differs from the VA schedule for the disability portion.
  • Paper check recipients should expect their check to be mailed on the standard date above, but delivery adds three to five additional business days depending on location.
  • Fiduciary or third-party payees managing funds for a veteran may see funds arrive on the standard date but processed by the fiduciary before reaching the veteran.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the first VA disability payment of 2027?

The first payment veterans receive in 2027 is on February 1, 2027, which covers January 2027 benefits. The payment covering December 2026 benefits arrives earlier, on December 31, 2026, because January 1, 2027 is a federal holiday.

Why did my VA disability payment come early?

VA disability compensation always moves to the last business day before the 1st when the 1st falls on a weekend or a federal holiday. This happens with the April, July, and December 2027 payments in the table above. The VA never delays a payment past its scheduled date, it only moves the date earlier.

Will VA disability pay increase in 2027?

Yes, VA disability compensation increases every year according to the same cost of living adjustment (COLA) the Social Security Administration announces, typically in October. Early 2027 estimates are centered around 3.8% to 3.9%, but the official number will not be confirmed until around mid-October 2026. The new rate takes effect December 1, 2026, and first shows up in the payment deposited December 31, 2026.

Does VA disability pay on the same day every month?

No. VA disability pays on the first business day of each month, which is usually the 1st but shifts to an earlier date whenever the 1st falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday. This happens several times a year, including three times across the 2027 schedule above.

How do I know my exact VA disability payment amount for 2027?

Your payment amount depends on your combined disability rating, whether you have a spouse, children, or dependent parents, and the finalized 2027 COLA percentage. Once the COLA is announced in October 2026, the VA publishes updated compensation rate tables on VA.gov, and your award letter will confirm your specific monthly amount.

What happens if my VA disability payment is late?

First check that your direct deposit information on VA.gov is current, since a closed or changed bank account is the most common cause. If the scheduled date has passed and your deposit still has not arrived after a few business days, contact the VA at 1-800-827-1000 or send a secure message through VA.gov.

Do 100% disabled veterans get paid on a different schedule?

No. Veterans at every disability rating, including 100%, are paid on the same monthly schedule. Only the payment amount differs based on the rating percentage and dependent status, not the payment date.

The average person finds $16,900 a year in benefits they qualify for.
