West Virginia EBT Deposit Schedule 2026: SNAP Payment Dates

West Virginia loads SNAP onto the Mountain State card between the 1st and 9th, based on your last name's first letter. Full 2026 calendar and income limits.

West Virginia loads SNAP benefits onto the Mountain State EBT card once a month, on a date set by the first letter of your last name. Deposits are spread across the first nine days of the month. If your last name starts with B, X, Y, or Z, your benefits post on the 1st. If it starts with G, L, or T, you get paid on the 9th. Your date does not change from month to month once your case is open, and it does not depend on your case number, your Social Security Number, or your birth date. This guide covers the full 2026 West Virginia SNAP deposit calendar, how to check your Mountain State card balance, what to do when a deposit does not show up, and the current income limits for the West Virginia Department of Human Services (DoHS).

West Virginia EBT Deposit Schedule by Last Name

The West Virginia Bureau for Family Assistance (BFA), part of the Department of Human Services, assigns your monthly deposit date using the first letter of the last name on your SNAP case. The nine issuance dates are not in simple alphabetical blocks, so check the table carefully rather than guessing.

First Letter of Last NameDeposit Date
B, X, Y, Z1st
C, F2nd
H, N, V3rd
I, M, O, U4th
Q, S5th
A, W6th
J, K, P7th
D, E, R8th
G, L, T9th

For example, a household under the last name "Ramirez" is paid on the 8th of every month, while a household under "Thompson" is paid on the 9th. Cash assistance benefits (WV WORKS) are handled differently and are made available on the 1st calendar day of every month, regardless of last name.

You’re probably leaving money on the table.

2026 Monthly Deposit Calendar for West Virginia

Because West Virginia issues on fixed calendar days rather than business days, your date is the same in every month of 2026. There is no month-by-month shift to track unless a date lands on a weekend, in which case funds are still released on the scheduled calendar date since EBT is an automated electronic system.

Repeat this table for January through December 2026. If the head of household on your case changes, for example after a divorce or a case transfer, your deposit date can shift to match the new last name on file.

What Time Do EBT Benefits Load in West Virginia?

BFA does not publish an official posting hour, and most cardholders report funds are typically available early in the morning on their scheduled date, often overnight or by the first few hours after midnight. If your balance still shows zero by mid afternoon, check a second time through a different method before assuming something is wrong, since a cached app screen is more common than a missed deposit.

How to Check Your West Virginia EBT Balance

West Virginia uses the ebtEDGE system for cardholder services on the Mountain State card. You have several ways to check your balance:

  • Phone. Call the 24 hour, toll free EBT helpline at 1-866-545-6502. Enter your 16 digit card number and PIN to hear your food and cash balances and your last deposit.
  • Online. Log in to the Cardholder Portal at ebtedge.com to view your balance and transaction history.
  • Mobile app. The FIS ebtEDGE mobile app lets you check your balance, view transactions, and lock or unlock your card.
  • Store receipt. Your remaining SNAP balance prints at the bottom of every EBT purchase receipt.
  • ATM. Some ATMs display your available cash balance if you also receive WV WORKS cash assistance.

For complex account issues, the Office of EBT Banking Services in Charleston can be reached at 304-558-4126 or by email at osawvebt@wv.gov.

What to Do if Your West Virginia Benefits Are Late or Missing

Work through these steps in order before assuming there is a problem with your case.

  1. Confirm your deposit date. Match the first letter of the last name on your case, not necessarily your own last name if someone else is the head of household, against the table above.
  2. Check your balance twice, through two different channels. Use the phone line and the ebtEDGE app, since an app screen can be cached and show an outdated balance.
  3. Wait out the full day. Deposits occasionally post later than usual, especially early in the month when volume is high.
  4. Call 1-866-545-6502 to confirm your card is active and whether benefits were released.
  5. Call your local county DHHR office or the client services line at 1-800-642-8589 if the helpline shows no issuance. The most common causes are a missed recertification, an unreturned interview call, or an unreported change that put your case in pending status.
  6. Check whether your renewal is due. Most West Virginia households with earned income get a 12 month certification period, while elderly or disabled households with no earned income can qualify for up to 24 months. If your recertification packet was not returned on time, benefits stop even though your card still works.

If your balance dropped without you spending it, treat it as theft and report it immediately at 1-866-545-6502 rather than waiting.

Protecting Your Mountain State Card from Skimming

Card skimming has affected SNAP households across the country, and federal law no longer authorizes states to replace benefits stolen through skimming or card cloning in most cases. That makes prevention the only real protection.

  • Lock your card in the ebtEDGE app whenever you are not shopping. Locking blocks spending, not your monthly deposit.
  • Change your PIN regularly, ideally right before your deposit date each month, either in the app or by calling 1-866-545-6502.
  • Inspect card readers before you swipe. A loose or bulky card slot is a sign of a skimming device, so use a different lane if something looks off.
  • Cover the keypad with your hand while entering your PIN.
  • Ignore texts, calls, or emails asking for your card number or PIN. BFA and ebtEDGE never ask for your PIN.
  • Report suspected theft immediately to have the card canceled and an investigation opened.

SNAP Purchase Restrictions Starting January 2026

Starting January 1, 2026, West Virginia launched a SNAP Healthy Choices demonstration waiver approved by USDA. Under this pilot, SNAP benefits can no longer be used to purchase soda and certain sugar sweetened carbonated beverages. This is a state level restriction on what SNAP dollars can buy, and it does not affect your deposit schedule or the amount of your monthly benefit.

West Virginia SNAP Income Limits for FY2026

These limits are effective October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026. West Virginia uses Broad Based Categorical Eligibility (BBCE) with a gross income test set at 200% of the federal poverty level, well above the federal standard of 130%.

Net Monthly Income Limits (100% FPL)

Most households must also pass a net income test after deductions for housing, utilities, dependent care, and, for elderly or disabled members, medical expenses above $35 per month.

Households with a member age 60 or older, or a member receiving disability benefits, skip the gross income test entirely and are judged on net income alone.

Asset Limits

West Virginia SNAP has a resource limit, unlike some BBCE states that waive it entirely. Most households cannot have more than $3,000 in countable resources such as cash and bank accounts. If your household includes someone age 60 or older or with a disability, the limit rises to $4,500. Your home, one vehicle per licensed driver, and retirement accounts do not count toward this limit.

4$994
5$1,183
6$1,421

Most households do not receive the maximum. Benefits are reduced by roughly 30 cents for every dollar of net income, so a household of three with $600 in net monthly income would receive approximately $785 minus $180, or about $605. The average West Virginia SNAP household currently receives around $172 a month, well below the maximum, because most recipients have some earned or unearned income counted against their benefit.

SNAP Rule Changes Affecting West Virginia in 2025 and 2026

Federal work requirement changes under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act took effect in late 2025 and apply in West Virginia. Able bodied adults without dependents between 18 and 64 must work, train, or volunteer at least 20 hours per week or face a three month limit on benefits within a 36 month period. The dependent child exemption narrowed to children under 14, and exemptions that previously covered homeless individuals, veterans, and former foster youth were removed. If you received a notice about work requirements, contact your local county DHHR office before your time limit runs out rather than after, since a closed case still follows your normal deposit date until the closure takes effect.

How to Apply for SNAP in West Virginia

  1. Apply online at wvpath.wv.gov. WV PATH (People's Access To Help) screens for SNAP, Medicaid, WV WORKS, and other programs in one application, and lets you check eligibility with the "Screen for Assistance" tool before you create an account.
  2. Apply by phone through the client services line at 1-800-642-8589 to request an application or get help completing one.
  3. Apply in person or by mail at your local county Department of Human Services office. West Virginia has an office in every county.
  4. Complete the interview. A caseworker contacts you by phone after your application is filed. Missing this call is the most common reason applications stall.
  5. Send in verification. Proof of identity, West Virginia residence, income, and Social Security Numbers for household members.
  6. Wait for a decision. DoHS has 30 days to decide. Households with very little income or cash on hand may qualify for expedited benefits within 7 days.

Once approved, your Mountain State EBT card is mailed within 7 to 10 days, and your ongoing deposit date is set by the first letter of your last name using the schedule at the top of this page. For more on assistance programs available statewide, see our West Virginia benefits guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What day does EBT deposit in West Virginia?

West Virginia deposits SNAP benefits between the 1st and the 9th of each month based on the first letter of your last name. Last names starting with B, X, Y, or Z are paid on the 1st, and last names starting with G, L, or T are paid on the 9th.

Does West Virginia use last name or case number for deposit dates?

West Virginia uses the first letter of the last name on your SNAP case, not your case number and not your Social Security Number. If the head of household on your case changes, your deposit date can shift to match the new last name.

Does West Virginia EBT deposit on weekends and holidays?

Benefits post on the scheduled calendar date. West Virginia does not publish a weekend or holiday shift rule for SNAP, so treat your assigned date as fixed and check your balance on that date regardless of the day of the week.

What time do West Virginia EBT benefits load?

There is no officially published time, but most cardholders see funds available early in the morning on their deposit date, often overnight. If nothing has changed by mid afternoon, check your balance again through ebtedge.com or by calling 1-866-545-6502.

What is the West Virginia EBT customer service number?

Call 1-866-545-6502, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for balance inquiries, transaction history, PIN changes, and lost or stolen card reports.

My West Virginia EBT benefits did not load. What now?

First confirm you are checking on the correct date for your last name. Then check your balance through both the phone line and the ebtEDGE app. If your scheduled date has passed and nothing arrived, call 1-866-545-6502 to see whether benefits were released, then call your county DHHR office or 1-800-642-8589 to check whether your case is pending a recertification or a missed interview.

Can I lock my Mountain State EBT card and still receive my monthly deposit?

Yes. Locking your card in the ebtEDGE app blocks spending, not deposits. Your benefits still load on schedule while the card is locked, which makes locking between shopping trips one of the most effective ways to protect against skimming.

What are the SNAP income limits in West Virginia for 2026?

West Virginia uses a 200% federal poverty level gross income limit under Broad Based Categorical Eligibility, which is $2,610 per month for one person and $5,360 per month for a household of four for October 2025 through September 2026. Households must also pass a net income test at 100% FPL, and West Virginia applies an asset limit of $3,000, or $4,500 for households with an elderly or disabled member.

Can SNAP still be used to buy soda in West Virginia?

No. Starting January 1, 2026, West Virginia's SNAP Healthy Choices demonstration waiver removed soda and certain sugar sweetened carbonated beverages from the list of items SNAP benefits can purchase. This restriction does not affect your deposit date or the size of your monthly benefit.

Is the West Virginia EBT schedule the same as Virginia's?

No. These are two different states with two different systems. Virginia pays on the 1st, 4th, or 7th based on a case number, while West Virginia pays between the 1st and the 9th based on the first letter of your last name. Do not use one state's schedule to predict the other's.

The average person finds $16,900 a year in benefits they qualify for.
